de_There are additional protocols which we will discuss shortly, but let’s first define what the Internet is. In its simplest form the internet is made up of a bunch of computers all connected together sharing information. The internet connects the world electronically allowing for us to send email, share files, use facebook, make calls through Skype and other interactions. In this illustration, the cloud represents the internet. Back in the day a cloud drawing was used to represent the telephone network, and later was used to depict the Internet. The internet does not live in the sky (ironically most of the internet cables are underground or even under water)… but nevertheless it is a good metaphor for a series of connected computers which we will explore more shortly. So, what is a server and how is it different from my home or work computer? Well, a server is a computer that acts as a relay or is used to stores files. These computers or servers make up the foundation of the internet. While even our home computer could be configured to host files and even websites, if we turn off our computer at home or get disconnected from the internet, the files that are on it are no longer accessible to other people on the internet, so we use special computers built for speed that are always on and connected to the internet to store our files. To better visualize the internet it is important to understand that there are many computers which all communicate together. These servers connect to other servers which connect to other servers which are all connected and share information. The internet is designed so that even if a server gets turned off there is logic to keep the internet going. This decentralization makes it so we cannot “turn off the internet” without an unrealistic world-wide effort to do so. To connect to the internet we are either on a laptop that connects to wirelessly to the router or a desktop computer which connects through an ethernet cable to the router. This router then connects to our modem which connects to an internet service provider in order to access the internet. Newer generations may take an internet connection for granted due to the widespread connectivity but many of us have taken a front-seat to the evolution over the years from a dial up through a phone line to very fast dedicated connections. Once you are connected to the internet you may access the other computers which form the internet and world-wide-web.
