Let’s discuss how to find a computer or server, this is done through Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses. We know that physical locations such as an office or a home has a street address. These were assigned so that we could find our way easily. The same way we have neighborhoods and addresses is true with online locations. Locations on the internet have numeric addresses called an Internet Protocol Address or IP Address. We can access a web server by entering in an IP address. Note that more than one website can share the same IP address. In order to keep things simple for this illustration we will just assume we are on a dedicated IP address or that there is only one site on the given IP. Nobody would use an IP address to refer to it as this is an inconvenient way to find a website. Can you imagine a radio advertisement saying “Visit us on the web at 126.96.36.199”. It would certainly make it hard for someone to remember and later find your site. This is why we use friendly ways to access websites, “Visit us on the web at Company.com”. The “Company.com” is called a domain name.
